Oxytocin – hormone of love

The Oxytocin hormone is also called the hormone of love. It is released during a massage, it reduces anxiety and increased pain threshold. The first time when somebody talked about it was in the early 20th century. Then the British neuroscientist Henry Dale proved that “some substance” in the hypothalamus causes contraction of the muscles of the uterus of pregnant cats.

Its name comes from two Greek word, which mean “quick” and “birth”. Later Dale becomes Nobel laureate and Oxytocin becomes more than a “pregnancy hormone”. Scientists have found that it is present not only in the uterus, but also in the brain, heart and alimentary tract. During orgasm its levels rises sharply, helping to transport the sperm to the egg.

Why the Oxytocin hormone is so important?

Recent precise researches indicates that some of the key centers of the brain and molecules, affect our ability to feel love and affection for others. The same research showed a good understanding of the way the brain controls our love and affection, which is crucial for the survival of the species. And it could also help researchers to find ways to treat autism, nervous tension and phobias. Scientists have been intrigued by the hormone of love for a long time. It plays an important role in the complexities of social behavior. The hormone is part of the mechanism in the brain that controls the formation of emotional bonds and play a role during sexual intercourse, childbirth and breastfeeding.

Currently, scientists from the National Institute for Health Justus-Liebig, Germany have found that Oxytocin hormone can make people’s behavior more boldly. In a scientific paper published in neurology journal, the researchers found that volunteers who sprayed it in their nose showed less signs of fear, in contact with the threatening images than those receiving placebo. The reactions of fear in the volunteers participating in the study were measured with sensitive technique for brain scanning, and it has been found reduced activity in a particular part of the brain called amigdale. The reduced activity in the amigdale has been associated with active social behavior and reduced fear. The researchers that made the study was funded by the National Institute of Mental Health. Scientists say the results suggest the possibility to use the hormone for the treatment of serious disorders that are characterized by increased anxiety and fear.
