What are pheromones?

The most asked question nowadays when it comes to sexual attraction is What are pheromones? They are chemical compounds naturally produced by every living organism. They affect the behavior and development of others of the same kind by sending subliminal olfactory signals of very powerful social or sexual responses.

Pheromone is a Greek word derived from the word φέρω (ferro) – transmit and ορμόνη (hormone) – excite/stimulate. It  was first introduced by Peter Karlson and Adolf Friedrich Johann Butenandt in 1959.  The chemical compounds can be found in all living things and represent the most ancient form of communication. There are different types of pheromones – that trigger an alarm signal, sexual attraction, aggression and many more. They are used often by insects, but occur in other groups of animals, and may consciously be detected at considerable distances and sometimes replace verbal communication. Ants use them to communicate. When an ant gets a source of food, it begins to secrete a pheromone in its way back to the nest to leave a kind of smelly path. Now lets have a look at a study conducted in USA. It will give us better idea.

A research done in the United States proves that even artificially produced they have an influence on the behavior of humans. Researchers from San Francisco State University put to the test the influence of synthetic pheromones on women of different ethnic origins and of different ages. During the social contacts, half of the  participants used pheromone perfume for women, and others did not. Only the scientists knew what woman to which group belongs. During the test participants wrote everything in a diary. An important information was how often they kissed, whether their partner during sleep hugged them and how often they had sex.

The result appears to be clear: 74% of women who used the pheromone perfume were kissed more frequent and longer and their partner was much more loving and had 6 times more often sex than the participants that did not apply any special cosmetics.

Never the less this study was conducted with female participants it shows that the chemical compounds secreted from the body have an important role on the relationship between men and women.

In humans, they are secreted by apocrine glands, sometimes called the glands of human smell. They are similar to glands that secrete sweat salt, but in contrast, the apocrine glands secrete fatty substance.

Apocrine glands are more often associated with hairy body parts such as armpits and groin and are usually combined with eccrine glands that help the distribution of pheromone secretions. Apocrine glands become active at puberty with hair growth in the armpits and groin, which increases the surface area for diffusion of the pheromone.

They also are changed by the substances released during metabolism – hormones, peptide chains, fats, sugars, etc., which are secrete into the skin and can give us some information about the internal chemistry and health of the individual. Over time, the species are adapted and set up whole chemical communication system. Contemporary animal and insect species possess specialized system in which develop secretory glands and receptor mechanisms.

Long time ago, researchers discovered that the pheromones play an important role in people’s life. The main male pheromone that men unconsciously secrete to attract the opposite sex is called Androstenone and the one that women secrete – Androstenol. Due to the evolution of mankind they are secreted only when people sweat. This is definitely not the most desirable way to date somebody.
